Rumi Spice Saffron
Started by a team of U.S. Army veterans, Rumi Spice works directly with rural Afghan farmers to source high quality, sustainably farmed saffron. They provide farmers with a market to produce and sell saffron globally. Acting as a catalyst for peaceful economic development, they also reinvest at least 10% of their profits back into infrastructural developments. Farming saffron is a labor of love, the namesake red threads are actually stigmas of a flower, which must be harvested delicately by hand. It takes 450,000 stigmas to make one kilogram of saffron; and each flower has only 3 stigmas. Do the math. It’s no wonder it’s one of the world’s most coveted—and expensive—spices. Thankfully, all you need is a tiny pinch of this deeply flavorful saffron to transform a recipe; with just half of a gram, you can make a few dozens dishes of paella.
